The Montgomery County School Board named Kevin Castner as the interim superintendent for the district. Castner previously served as superintendent for Albemarle County Public Schools and as the interim school superintendent in Shenandoah County.
“I look forward to serving Montgomery County Public Schools as the interim leader,” said Castner. “I plan to spend my energy supporting the district as we continue the strong forward movement currently happening at MCPS.”
Castner received a doctorate in education administration curriculum from George Washington University, a master’s in education administration and curriculum from the University of Maryland and a bachelor of science in biology and chemistry from Marquette University.
“We believe that Dr. Castner’s leadership philosophy will continue the quality education that exists in Montgomery County,” said Rev. James E. Lyons, III, board chair. “We look forward to working with him while we continue to search for our next long-term superintendent.”
The School Board continues the process for naming a permanent replacement for Brenda Blackburn. Initial candidate interviews will occur at the end of October, with finalist interviews and a community forum scheduled for November. The new superintendent is expected to be named on November 12.
