Annie Whitaker was approved as the deputy superintendent for MCPS. Whitaker currently serves as the director of human resources for MCPS and has more than 17 years of experience in public education.

“Annie has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will allow her to serve MCPS in this expanded capacity,” said Superintendent Mark Miear. “I know that she will continue to be an asset to our division as our deputy superintendent.”

Whitaker has a bachelor's degree in English and masters degrees in both curriculum and instruction and in educational leadership. Whitaker will assume her new role on July 1. Lois Graham, current deputy superintendent, will retire in June after 38 years in public education. Graham will serve as a consultant to MCPS during the division’s strategic planning process in 2019-2020.

Danny Knott, principal at Eastern Montgomery High School, was approved as the new director of human resources. Knott’s 10 years of experience as a building principal, managing staff and students, make him the perfect fit for this position. Knott will assume his new role on July 1.

Also approved was the reorganization of the student services department. As part of the School Board’s commitment to equity and inclusion for all students, Judy Diggs will assume a new role as the Director of Equity, Diversity, and Tiered Interventions. While the position title is new, the administrative position in this role is not.  Diggs will lead the work in Virginia Tiered Systems of Support, which is currently grant funded, and will implement processes, provide training, and ensure equity to meet the needs of all students in MCPS. Diggs has worked with MCPS for 34 years, most recently as the Director of Student Services.

Brian Kitts, principal at Blacksburg High School, was approved as the Director of Student Services and School Safety, effective July 1. The division faces increased requirements and responsibilities surrounding school safety, and Kitts’s multi-level experience will be a benefit to the district in this new role.  Kitts will take over duties of the current director of student services, with a targeted focus on school safety.

The community input process for the principal positions at Eastern Montgomery High School and Blacksburg High School will begin as soon as next week.
