Proposed Implementation of School Start Times

On February 2, 2016, the Montgomery County School Board rescinded the previous vote to change school start times for the 2016-17 school year.

The Implementation Team for School Start Times has started the detail-work related to the School Start Times Change scheduled to take place in August of 2016.

On April 21, the Montgomery County School Board voted to approve the change in school start times beginning with the 16-17 school year. This recommendation was based on stakeholder surveys, the public forum on school start times, the work of the school start times committee, and significant research regarding sleep patterns.

The adopted schedule, to begin in August 2016, is:

School Hours  Range of
Pickup Times
Elementary 8:00 - 2:30 7:00 - 7:50
Middle 8:50 - 3:35 7:40 - 8:40
High 8:50 - 3:35 7:40 - 8:40

Over the next 15 months, the division will update the community on the movement toward these new school start times. Information will be communicated to the entire community so that all of those affected by this change will have adequate time to plan.
